Smoke extract fans are typically used as part of a strategy for minimising the effects of fire. Effective extraction of smoke can win time for escaping occupants and attending fire crews alike.

A sub-branch of smoke fans are car park fans and tunnel fans, sometimes known as jet fans. Although they may extract smoke should a fire arise their main job is to effect an air movement through the structure to ensure that harmful exhaust gases do not accumulate.

Smoke fans are generally rated to operate at higher temperatures than standard fans and they come in numerous forms including roof extract fans, centrifugal duct fans and axial duct fans.
